Why Birds Flying Low Means Rain Is Coming
When birds drop out of the sky and start flying low over fields and water, you have maybe six hours before weather arrives. Sailors knew this. Farmers knew this. It wasn’t superstition.
Before a storm, atmospheric pressure drops. High-altitude flight becomes harder. Birds feel it in their ears — the same pressure change you feel in yours when a plane descends. They compensate by flying lower, where the air is denser. They weren’t predicting the storm. They were reacting to it. The storm was already there. Just not yet visible.
Swallows are the clearest signal. They chase insects, and insects drop low in falling pressure. The birds follow. When you see swallows skimming the ground, you weren’t watching birds anymore. You were reading a barometer.
