How to Find North Using Only the Night Sky
For most of human history, every person who traveled after dark knew how to find north without a compass. Today almost no one does. Here is what they knew.
Find the Big Dipper. Locate the two stars that form its outer edge — the side away from the handle. Draw a line through them and extend it five times the distance between those stars. That fixed point of light is Polaris. True north. Within one degree, always.
Sailors used this to cross the Atlantic. Shepherds used it to move flocks across unfamiliar country. Enslaved people escaping north called it the Drinking Gourd and used it to navigate through darkness toward freedom.
The star hasn’t moved. The knowledge has.
Polaris will be overhead every clear night for the rest of your life. It takes about forty-five seconds to find it once you know how.
